“Edit with Notepad” for File Context Menu

How to add “Edit with Notepad” to the context menu for files.

The Manual Way

Open the Registry Editor (“C:\Windows\regedit.exe”) and open the folders to “HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell”.
Right click on the “shell” folder, select “New” > “Key” and name it to “Edit with Notepad”.
Now right click on the newly created “Edit with Notepad” folder, select “New” > “Key” and name this one “command”.
Right click on the “(Default)” value in the right panel, select “Modify” and enter this in for the value data:

notepad.exe %1

That’s it, exit regedit. The change should apply already; if not, restart your computer.

The Automatic REG File

Save this script as EditWithNotepad.reg and run it to add “Edit with Notepad” to the context menu for files:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\Open with Notepad]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*\shell\Open with Notepad\command]
@="notepad.exe %1"
